Read Me file
Wolfenstein 3D
Version 1.0.2

Thanks for playing Wolfenstein 3D! This "Read Me" file includes the latest information on several important changes that were made to the game after the manual was printed.

(This Read Me file is installed in the Wolfenstein 3D folder when you install the game, and a copy of the same Read Me file is present on Disk 1.)

Quick Start for those who hate to read the manual

Press Command-K to go to the "Configure Keyboard" dialog box so you can see what all the key commands are.

Not mentioned on the "Configure Keyboard" dialog box: You can press the number keys on the keyboard (not the numeric keypad) to immediately select a different weapon.

Use the "Screen Size" menu option to increase the size of the game window. The menu bar will appear when you move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen.

Make sure your monitor is set to 256 colors before you begin playing, for maximum speed.

Changes made since the manual was printed

Keyboard Control

We have included a new menu item called Configure Keyboard that will let you customize the keyboard. You can assign the keys however you wish. When you first play the game, press Command-K to check out the keyboard controls and change them if you wish. Note that this functionality is a replacement for the keyboard chart that is printed in the manual!

The Apple Adjustable Keyboard cannot simultaneously sense keys that are pressed on its numeric keypad as well as keys on the main keyboard. If you own this keyboard, we suggest configuring the controls so the keys I, J, K, and L control your movement, rather than using the arrow keys or numeric keypad. (Try the "Powerbook" setting in the "Configure Keyboard" dialog box.)

Some third-party keyboards have been observed to have a problem using the Shift key as an action button. (In Wolfenstein 3D, Shift normally makes you run.) If you experience this problem, use the "Configure Keyboard" menu option to change the Run key from Shift to some other key.

The Missions

The 90 levels of Wolfenstein 3D are divided into the "Second Encounter" game, which includes 30 levels of Castle Wolfenstein, and six other episodes which comprise 60 levels. You can choose which episode to play in a dialog box which appears before the difficulty-level dialog box appears. See the manual for more information about each episode.

Incompatibilites

You should remove the "Easy Access" file from your Extensions folder (in the System Folder). This file makes a funny noise and changes the operation of your keyboard if you press the Shift key five times in a row (among other things). See your Macintosh System software manuals for more information about "Easy Access".

A crash bug has been observed if you use "Now Menus" (part of Now Utilities) to change the sound volume. If this happens to you, don't use Now Menus to change the sound volume again! We suggest using the freeware program "DepthCharge" for a similar effect.

This game is not shareware

Please note that although Wolfenstein 3D: First Encounter is a shareware game, the game you are playing is not. Please don't distribute this version of Wolfenstein 3D to your friends or to BBSs or online services -- that's what the First Encounter is for.

If you received this software in some way other than purchasing it directly from MacPlay, please do the right thing and call 1-800-4MACPLAY with your credit card at hand, or see your favorite retailer. Thank you for your honesty!

Please note that this 800 number is for orders only and operators are not equipped to answer any technical questions or problems. (See below for this stuff.)

See the "Shareware Registration" option in the game's Apple menu for more details.
